My First Week in DC: A reflection

So.

I've lived here officially for about a week now (I'm only a few hours short) and I love it. I really REALLY do. I love sitting out on my deckony (what, it's too big to be just a balcony!) and sipping wine and looking at the DC skyline. I love walking to a BBQ and realizing that the building I'm walking along is actually the headquarters of the GAO. I love jogging on the bike path and thinking I'm seeing famous pols and realizing, hey! Might be them!

Oh Barack, please go running in Arlington.

I LOVE my friends at school, and the people at the school in general, and the area of DC the school is in. I love the bars I've been to, the beers I've drank, and the men I've drunk them with (no excitement, just lots of organized social events).

But I HATE the transportation system.

I have spent more money in the past 7 days on cabs than I did in the three YEARS of living in the New York area. How is that possible, you may ask? It's because the stinkin' Metro (which I'll give you, is a gorgeous gorgeous system) stops running.

IT STOPS RUNNING.

I thought Chicago was bad when service got severely curtailed in the wee hours of the AM, but at least I could always get home! And yeah, I got totally spoiled by years of living 5 minutes from the L and 15 minutes from the PATH. But the Metro stop closest to me is like 8 minutes away so I thought - golden!

EXCEPT IT CAN'T GET ME HOME IF I'M OUT LATE.

I haven't yet figured out a solution to this problem that doesn't involve drunk driving a bicycle, walking miles by my lonesome in an as-yet-unknown town, or quitting going out post midnight or so.

Suggestions are welcome.

But other than this little mishap, I love DC. A LOT a lot. And I think I'm going to be very, very happy here for my 2 yrs at my pretty school with its pretty boys and the pretty beers they buy me.

If only I was studying physics, and could figure out how to teleport.

Anon! So sorry for taking so long to respond, not sure why your comment got lost. I don't live where I go to school, but I live in Arlington. The problem is more the fact that it's so far away from where I go out that I can't walk, and the metro closes. Sad!
